My Love/Hate With Social Media

mommy advice Mar 24, 2017

One thing I have noticed since I have become a SAHM is that I have become significantly more isolated. We do have a "radius of fun" that I can get to from a double stroller which includes a library and park so THANK GOD for that!!! In this season of life I just have to accept the reality that my world has become significantly smaller. So honestly the internet has been a  precious gift (how did SAHMS survive before?!) where I can regularly chat or keep up with friends. I read countless blogs, texts, articles, watch videos and listen to music, cruise Facebook & Instagram...

BECAUSE IT IS MY WINDOW TO THE WORLD! My husband always teases me about it and I feel convicted some days how often I am on social media but what is a mom to do?!

In that same breath, it can be my worst nightmare. I keep thinking of my mom's reminder "comparison is the thief of joy". That is social media's down side. It starts off as an exciting chance to keep up with friends from afar, to engage with other moms, learn new things but then the slow creep of dissatisfaction creeps in...the comparison...you start to shrink and other's enlarge. Your home suddenly feels suffocatingly small, your child seems less bright, your thighs...oh those damn thighs.

I have started setting a limit on social media for myself each day. When I feel that insecurity creep in it's already done its damage on my self esteem. Now I've had a lot of friends post that they are taking a fast from social media...which to me seems a little ridiculous. Now if you have gotten that far into a dependency on social media, by ALL MEANS WALK AWAY. But for those of us who have very little to no interaction with other adults during the day, it can feel even more isolating. My thinking is also that---abstinence is easier than self control...But how else do you develop self control then when you actually USE IT?!
